Alex Rejto started LCYO Champions division in 2013 with the support of the Carlsbad Community.
Elijah Rejto started the Step Up Division in 2017 and took over as Director of Champions Division of LCYO
In 2021, a group of dedicated volunteers are running the Champions Division and are excited to continue the wonderful program that the Rejto Family started.
Thank you for your interest or for registering to volunteer for Champions baseball. We’re excited to be starting our 10th season with such a great group of volunteers.
For those that are new, Champions is a co-ed special needs baseball program that takes place at Stagecoach Park. This year, the games are scheduled to begin March 26 and run until May 21. There are three game times. The games usually run about an hour or 2 innings of batting around the lineup. Games are every Saturday starting at 3pm or 4pm for beginners (depending on age) and 5pm for Step-Up division.
The most rewarding experience for volunteers and the players is to be a dedicated buddy, this would mean going to nearly every game and really getting to know your player. Especially for kids with special needs, consistency is paramount. Our dedicated volunteers who are able to make that time commitment tell us about how much they enjoy the experience. Some of our volunteers have been paired with the same player for over 5 years.
However, not everyone is able to make that kind of time commitment. For those people there are floater buddies. These volunteers go to the games they can make and will paired with players who don’t have a buddy that day.
In order to participate, volunteers are required to attend one of the online classroom orientations as well as the mandatory field orientation. The online classroom orientations are on TBD. The field orientation will be on March 19 from TBD at Stagecoach Park. These will help inform you on how the game works and how to interact with special needs kids.
Thanks again for signing up for the program. Let’s make 2022 the best year of Champions baseball yet.

Concussion in Sports
The NFHS has teamed up with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to educate coaches, officials, parents and students on the importance of proper concussion recognition and management in high school sports. This course highlights the impact of sports-related concussion on athletes, teaches how to recognize a suspected concussion, and provides protocols to manage a suspected concussion with steps to help players return to play safely after a concussion. Each state's requirements for concussion management are included as part of the course.
